Our Story of Discovery…and the Promise of a Better Life

Most church goers have heard of the Sermon on the Mount. And like many, we knew the Beatitudes as a cornerstone of Jesus’ teachings. But it wasn’t until just recently that we connected the dots between the common threads of what people are struggling with today and what Jesus showed were antidotes for these common everyday problems.

With the promise of benefits so great, we were intrigued to dive deeper into these  teachings AND into the various translations over time. We stumbled upon the Aramaic version (Jesus’ native language) and that’s when it got really interesting. We learned that much like Mandarin, Aramaic was very much a language of tone and vibration. Where a single word in this sound-based language may have seven or even eight different meanings based on tone alone! And, when the Beatitudes were first transcribed into what later became the Bible, it was written in Greek, which is a linear, meaning-based language similar to English.

As Greek-American poet and translator, Kimon Friar states,

“Even the simplest word can never be rendered with its exact equivalent into another language.”

We found this fascinating and kept searching deeper into these translations to try and better understand what Jesus actually said over 2,000 years ago. In doing so, this question kept coming up…

Is there more to this than we’d been taught?

With so many interpretations of the Beatitudes, from English to Old English, then back to Latin, Greek, and finally Aramaic, much of it didn’t make sense at first. But finally, we discovered what had been hidden underneath the layers of translations.

Within these teachings, Jesus had given us a simple set of “practices” that bring us into greater alignment to experience more peace.

When we put these discoveries to the test in our own lives, we were like, wow! This is so awesome! And, the best part of it? By using the Beatitudes as a practice, it automatically integrates these principles into our core programming, which allows us to finally have real change that actually sticks.
